How to Catch Mew in Pokémon Red, Blue & Yellow
The original Pokémon came with 151 unique Pokémons. To collect them all you need to trade with friends to collect the Pokémons missing in your version. In the end you were able to catch 150 Pokémons. This was an huge disappointment as you were not able to literally catch them all. One Pokémon named Mew was not able to be caught. This Pokémon was only distributed at some special events. Most of them only took place in Japan which left a big gap in your small Pokémon heart as you were not able to fulfill the main phrase of the series. Fortunately the GameBoy gamese were not bug free. By ‘glitching’ you were able to catch the missing number 151 Pokémon!
Though it was possible most kids were never able to catch Mew. This was because the steps taken were rather difficult for a child to perform. In this tutorial we will finally explain how to acquire a Mew in Pokémon Red, Blue & Yellow! This will make an end to your children’s nightmare and make sure that you are finally able to catch them all!
Prerequisites
Make sure you fulfill all the requirements before you start performing the glitch. Skip the fighter specified in the photo below. You will need to come back to this trainer in a later stage.

You also have to skip the fighter located at the end of the underground in the direction of Lavender Town. Check the first step to see which trainer has to be skipped. Make sure you obtain a Pokémon which knows HM02 Fly. In order for the glitch to work, you need to make sure you at least have access to this Hidden Machine.
How to catch Mew: Step 1
Begin this glitch by starting at the underground exit located in Route 8. This position can be seen in the picture below. Make sure to Save your game. Saving after this point will disrupt the procedure.

Walk down one step and directly press start. The menu has to open before the Gambler fights you. If done correctly, you are now able to fly to Cerulean city using a Pokémon which knows HM02 Fly.

Catching Mew: Step 2
Once in Cerulean City go up north to the Nugget Bridge. Go east to find the Youngster owning a Slowpoke which you skipped during the prerequisites.
Note: your start button no longer works

How to catch Mew: Step 3
Make sure you start at the position of the photo. He should be walking towards you. This is because your game will freeze when he is not able to walk towards you.

After the battle, the start button will work again. Press it and use your flying Pokémon to go to Lavender Town.

Catching Mew: Step 4
Go west and leave Lavender Town. Once you enter Route 8, the menu will automatically open. Press B to close the menu

You did it! You are finally battling a wild Mew which means that you are able to catch it. A tip here is to bring at least some Great Balls to increase your chances to catch the Mew.

Et voilà you caught Mew. If you are interested how the glitch works, please feel free to read on.
How to catch Mew: How the glitch works
At the first step you will fly away from the battle. The game will remember this. This causes your start button to no longer work. The glitch works on a twelve-byte section of memory which locates the state of the last Pokemon you fought. The values are:
8E 11 00 3C 00 1E 00 1D 00 1C 00 15
8E is a common byte used for all battles. The second byte (11) notes the enemy’s level. 11 hexadecimal is 17 decimal which is the same value as the level of the Slowpoke. The next ten bytes indicate the stats (HP/ATTACK/DEFENSE/SPEED/SPECIAL) of the Slowpoke. The last byte is the most important. It is the “least significant byte” of the enemy Pokémon’s Special stat. This value is 15 in hexadecimal and 21 in decimal. These values are used when you encounter Mew at Route 8. The hexadecimal value of Mew is 15 whilst it level will be 7. As you can see in the screens showed at the final steps, the level matches this description.
